Work has been underway across the Lviv region since the end of July 2026, including at the Lviv Lyceum named after the Heroes of Kruty.
At the lyceum, the STEM classroom, geography classroom, physics classroom and teaching and research laboratory, as well as the biology teaching and research laboratory, are being renovated. The spaces are currently being prepared for the installation of the necessary equipment and their launch.
Taras Hrytsevych, Deputy Principal for Academic Affairs at the Lviv Lyceum named after the Heroes of Kruty, emphasizes that it is particularly important for today’s students to have opportunities to explore and satisfy their curiosity by applying theoretical knowledge using modern digital equipment — through experiments, practical investigations, and laboratory work.
“Natural sciences are the foundation of modern technologies as a whole. And thanks to technological solutions, we can now address the complex challenges facing our country. Therefore, these upgrades will enable our lyceum to better prepare our graduates,” added Taras Hrytsevych, Deputy Principal for Academic Affairs at the Lviv Lyceum.
Iryna Khoma, a physics teacher at the Lviv Lyceum named after the Heroes of Kruty, believes that the renovated spaces will provide a strong practical component that was significantly lacking in the outdated classrooms.
“Before the renovations, the science classrooms at our lyceum were ordinary standard classrooms where we had to demonstrate virtually everything ‘with our fingers.’ The improvements being introduced are very important, especially for physics. With demonstration equipment, students will be able, for example, to build an electrical circuit themselves or explain a particular phenomenon or process through practical research. They will also have better opportunities to achieve top results in academic competitions because they will have the knowledge and practical skills needed to complete practical tasks,” says Iryna Khoma, a physics teacher at the Lviv Lyceum.
The Implementation Support Team (IST) works with educational institutions, helping them navigate all stages of creating modern learning spaces – from planning renovations to launching laboratories in line with the guidelines. East Europe Foundation implements and coordinates the project: it forms the IST team, provides expert and methodological support, and ensures quality control.
“By supporting STEM education in Ukraine, we are first and foremost contributing to the development of future professionals. Companies need engineers, technologists, researchers, and IT specialists – people who can apply theory in practice and work with technology. Developing these competencies begins long before young people enter the labour market. For us and for business, supporting STEM education means an opportunity to contribute to preparing professionals whose skills will be needed by Ukrainian companies in the future,” said Viсtor Liakh, president of East Europe Foundation.
The project is currently in an active implementation phase. Starting September 1, the renovated spaces in the Lviv region will gradually open their doors to students.
Modern Learning Spaces is a project supporting the development of modern educational spaces in academic lyceums across Ukraine. It is implemented by the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine as part of the World Bank-supported Learning and Education Access and Resilience in Times of Crisis in Ukraine (LEARN) programme, financed, among other sources, through the Ukraine Relief, Recovery, Reconstruction and Reform Trust Fund (URTF), in partnership with East Europe Foundation and socially responsible Ukrainian businesses. The project’s partners include DTEK and Metinvest of SCM Group, EPAM Ukraine, and Quantum Systems Ukraine. Big City Lab provides advisory and expert support to educational institutions in implementing the project.
