Help for Kharkiv and Kherson regions

In May 2024, we launched our Together for Support Program, which provides humanitarian aid to the war-affected population of Kharkiv and Kherson regions.

For this purpose, we have enlisted the support of three local non-governmental organizations that know the needs of local residents best and are ready to deliver the aid even to frontline communities.

The partners have been actively working on the first phase of their grant projects over the summer. Due to their joint efforts, thousands of residents of Kharkiv and Kherson regions have already received the help they needed. Here are the first results.

“Union of Journalists ‘Alternatyva’”

The NGO from Kherson continued to help people even during the occupation. It continues to do so now, despite constant shelling, stress, and danger.

During the three months of the project, the “Union of Journalists ‘Alternatyva’” formed and distributed 680 sets of equipment for farming on their own personal plots.

Nearly 1,900 residents of 12 villages in Kherson and Beryslav districts received gardening wheelbarrows, shovels, digging hoes, rakes, shears, buckets, and watering hoses.

The residents admit that this help was extremely valuable and timely for them. After all, older people and families with children often do not have the extra money to buy new equipment. And having their own garden in the village is perhaps the only way to feed a family in frontline communities.

The gardening sets were distributed to families whose households were damaged by shelling or who were flooded after the Kakhovka HPP was blown up. Both targeted districts of Kherson region suffered significant destruction due to hostile actions. And some villages have virtually no surviving households because of the fierce fighting there.

According to the staff of the “Union of Journalists ‘Alternatyva’”, aid is rarely delivered to the Beryslav district, as the road to it is too dangerous. Nevertheless, the organization was able to deliver humanitarian kits to three villages in the district, as originally planned.

“Building the Future Together”

The charitable organization received a grant from us to distribute humanitarian aid in the frontline communities of Kharkiv region.

During the first wave of its project, the CSO “Building the Future Together” purchased and provided IDPs and local residents of Zolochiv, Vilkhiv, Derhachi, and Tsyrkuny communities with the necessary supplies:

  • 137 sets of non-food items for the household (kitchen utensils, towels, blankets, etc.);
  • 1,010 standard hygiene kits for households (household chemicals and personal care products);
  • 242 hygiene kits for people with disabilities (household chemicals, personal care products, four packages of diapers and two packages of diapers).

Initially, the team planned to create 185 hygiene kits for people with disabilities. However, due to the efficient use of funds during procurement, we managed to purchase an additional 57 kits.

Among those who received humanitarian aid are the elderly, families with children, people with disabilities, people with limited mobility, and families whose property was damaged by more than 50% during the full-scale invasion.

People admit that in the difficult conditions they are in, humanitarian aid is not just support, but a necessity for survival.

“Dzherelo Vidrodzhennia”

Already at the beginning of its work, the charitable foundation from Kharkiv region was forced to change the geography of its project due to the shift in the front line. The offensive of the enemy army led to the evacuation of 12,000 people and the closure of certain areas for any civilian activity.

The first wave of help from the charitable foundation Dzherelo Vidrodzhennia was a set of agricultural equipment for IDP families of Savyn and Barvinkove communities in Izyum district. Mostly these are families whose homes were completely destroyed by the war and whose inventory was looted by the enemy during the occupation.

The humanitarian kits included a shovel, pitchfork, hoes, lawn rake, toothed rake, axe, gloves, cultivator, trowel, bucket, sprayer, hack saw and shears. According to the charitable foundation staff, all this equipment is basic and gives people the opportunity to cultivate their own gardens, harvest crops and provide their families with food and stocks for the winter.

Initially, the organization planned to form 600 sets of equipment for farming on their own personal plots. However, due to cost savings during the tender process, the team managed to purchase an additional 250 sets.

Thus, this summer, 850 IDP households in Savyn and Barvinkove communities in Izyum district of Kharkiv region received humanitarian aid from the charitable foundation Dzherelo Vidrodzhennia.

We are extremely grateful to our partners for their courageous and dedicated work. Despite the daily danger and constant stress, volunteers continue to work and help others. This is extremely valuable and deserves utmost respect. We wish the organizations strength and inspiration in their future work!
