Community Centers for Senior Citizens
The Community Centers for Senior Citizens project creates opportunities for social engagement and provides venues for seniors’ pastime/social activities whereby they can gather to sing, dance, perform and spend time with each other during afternoon tea, as well as gain new skills through several hobby groups. The project also improves the standard of living among local seniors by offering new and improved services, as well as medical, psychological and legal consultations. In all, EEF has supported the creation of 11 community centers for seniors across Ukraine, in particular in Zaporizhzhia, Cherkasy, Poltava and Cherkasy oblasts. The activities were also supported by Departments of Labor and Social Protection of Cherkasy, Poltava, Sumy Oblasts State Administrations.
Three community centers were launched in the city of Kremenchuk in the premises of the Territorial Social Services Centers in Kryukivskyi, Kremenchutskyi and Avtozavodskyi raions.
• With the equipment procured through the Project, the students of the University of Third Age in Avtozavodskyi raion will learn how to work on a PC. The citizens also enjoy participating in theatrical and health lifestyle groups. Volunteers and territorial center’s staff teach in these groups.
• Kremenchutskyi raion community center equipped a computer class for seniors and a room for physical rehabilitation;
• Kryukivskyi raion community center opened a computer classroom and Internet club, as well as launched various groups of fine arts, embroidery, knitting, choir, chess, checkers, dominoes, since all the conditions for expanding group activities and creation of new groups were created.
New community center for elderly will be launched in village Zhovtneve of Poltava oblast within the new joint social initiative of PJSC “Ukrsotsbank” which operates under the UniCredit Bank trade mark, UniCredit Foundation and East Europe Foundation.
The rural community center for the elderly will be established in the premises of the rayon hospital. The community center will serve elderly people from Zhovtneve and four neighboring villages (Fediivka, Novomykhailivka, Pishchane, and Kukobivka). Activities of the project will include training of the personnel of the center and equipping it with the necessary equipment for providing social leisure and basic medical services to the elderly. In addition so called University of third age will be created which will help clients to receive new knowledge and skills. The project will be implemented in cooperation with the local NGO “Association of regional development of the village of Zhovtneve” and with the involvement of rayon and villages authorities.
EEF and partners’ new social initiative aims to provide aid to vulnerable groups in the process of social integration and at community development in Ukraine. Charitable initiatives developed by East Europe Fund in partnership with UniCredit Foundation anticipate realization of the whole range of actions aimed at strengthening access of vulnerable groups of local citizens to ordinary and new social services – aid to the elderly, vocational training and strengthening of life skills for the youth which undergoes difficult living situations, support of labor inclusion of youth with disabilities, promotion of healthy lifestyle among the students of vocational technical schools, organization of multifunctional seminars for people with disabilities. Each project will be implemented along with the involvement of local NGOs.
EEF and Japan Tobacco International (JTI) have again united their efforts to create news centers for seniors now in Crimea. In 2012 two centers will be established in Crimea to improve the quality of life of and access to social services for senior citizens. In particular, District Councils of Veterans will renovate and launch a center in in R?zdolne for the elderly and people with disabilities, organize a variety of hobby clubs for music, knitting, embroidery and more, plus organize community events. In its turn Bahchysaray organization of veterans will establish a seniors’ center at a Bakhchisaray center for the elderly and people with disabilities as well as at two locations of a territorial center in the villages of Kuybyshevo and Vilino. It will organize a wide range of hobby clubs, including those focused on singing, theater, health, crafts and more. As part of the health club, seniors will receive access to gym equipment and lectures from medical specialists.
EEF and Japan Tobacco International opened three new centers in Cherkasy oblast, in particular in Pridneprovskoye village, Cherkasy and Zolotonosha towns. New center opened in Pridneprovskoye now offers three new services for its clients including massage, hairdressing and clothes repairing. These services are very much demanded by local inhabitants taking into account that the village is far from the towns where such services are provided. Now seniors can enjoy these valuable resources in their village without spending additional money and time. In addition, EEF and Japan Tobacco International have helped to renovate the venue for Community Center. Before the renovations the building was almost destroyed and unsuitable for conducting public events. Now it welcomes seniors who come to participate in different hobby groups like singing, embroidery and other pastime activities. Centers in Zolotonosha and Cherkasy also provide new services and established several very interesting hobby groups.
EEF and Telenor Group in Ukraine allocated UAH 296,497 to create three new social activity centers for pensioners in Poltava and Sumy oblasts, in particular in Pyryatyn (Poltava oblast), Nedryhayliv and Lypova Dolyna (Sumy oblast). Public organizations, EEF local partners, used the grants to renovate and furnish the premises in the existing state-supported district social service centers. These NGOs, together with the employees of the district social service centers have created interesting and meaningful activities for patrons of the community centers, like diverse hobby groups, media/press clubs and a health/fitness group.
Two community centers in Zaporizhzhia which were opened with the support from EEF and Slavutich, Carlsberg Group in Zaporizhzhia are now frequented by more than 400 pensioners. In addition to new services available now EEF has also established 12 interest clubs.
Three community centers were opened in in Poltava, Dykanka and Kremenchuk (Poltava oblast) with support from EEF and Telenor Group in Ukraine.
